What is this committee about
Founded in 1946 to address the needs of children in post-war Europe, UNICEF has evolved into a permanent UN agency with a global mandate to protect the rights of every child, particularly the most vulnerable. Its core purpose is to ensure child survival, development, and protection through direct field programs in over 190 countries. A central and persistent challenge within this mandate is the eradication of child labor, and the specific focus of this committee is to address this issue through economically sustainable solutions.

This approach moves beyond temporary interventions to tackle the root cause—systemic poverty—by designing strategies that make child labor unnecessary. This involves strengthening social protection systems, creating viable livelihood opportunities for families, and ensuring access to quality education, thereby providing families with the economic security to keep their children out of the workforce and in school, aligning with UNICEF's enduring mission to safeguard children's futures.
