Violations of the right to privacy in the digital age represent a growing threat to fundamental human rights and personal autonomy worldwide. Since the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure in the early 2000s, mass surveillance, unlawful data harvesting, state-sponsored cyber intrusions, and commercial exploitation of personal data have increased significantly.
International actors and civil society organizations have pushed for robust regulatory standards, as privacy infringements directly endanger freedom of expression, democratic participation, and political dissent. Today, digital privacy remains a critical concern for the United Nations Human Rights Council, with weak data protection laws, rapid technological advancement, and corporate impunity allowing intrusive surveillance practices to flourish. Delegates will focus on strengthening international human rights frameworks, enhancing cross-border regulatory cooperation, establishing accountability for state and non-state actors, and safeguarding individual freedoms in an increasingly connected world.
